Overview

Ashton Kelder, now known as Ashton Winery, is one of the largest and most established wineries in the Robertson Wine Valley of the Western Cape. Founded in 1962 as a cooperative cellar by 46 local grape growers, it has grown into a major wine producer sourcing grapes from approximately 60 member farms across the region.

Location

The winery is located in the town of Ashton, between Robertson and Montagu on Route 60, in the heart of the famous “Valley of Wine and Roses.” The area’s diverse soils, Mediterranean climate, and proximity to the Breede River contribute to excellent grape-growing conditions.

Wine Range

Ashton Winery produces a broad range of wines, including:

  • Chenin Blanc
  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Chardonnay
  • Colombard
  • Pinotage
  • Shiraz
  • Merlot
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Rosé wines
  • Sparkling wines
  • Fortified wines
  • Premium Roodewal Reserve blends

The winery is known for offering quality wines at accessible prices while also producing premium single-vineyard and reserve wines.

History

Originally named Roodewal, the cooperative was renamed Ashton Winery in 2016 to strengthen its association with the town of Ashton. Today the cellar processes approximately 24,000 tons of grapes annually, making it a significant contributor to South Africa’s wine industry.

Winemaking & Terroir

The vineyards stretch across a variety of soil types, from fertile alluvial soils near the Breede River to rocky slopes at the foothills of the Langeberg Mountains. This diversity allows the winery to produce a wide range of wine styles and grape varieties.
