Overview
Boplaas is one of South Africa’s most celebrated family-owned wine estates and distilleries, located in Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo. The Nel family has owned and operated the farm since 1880, making it a sixth-generation family business with a rich heritage in winemaking and distilling.

Location
Boplaas is situated in Calitzdorp, often referred to as the “Port Wine Capital of South Africa,” at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains in the Klein Karoo. The region’s warm, dry climate is particularly suited to fortified wines and Portuguese grape varieties.

History

Established in 1880 by the Nel family.
Originally renowned for potstill brandy production.
Distilling resumed in 1989 after a nearly 70-year hiatus.
Under the leadership of Carel Nel, Boplaas became a pioneer of Portuguese grape varieties in South Africa.
