The basic function of a clutch is the following:
- Allow the engagement and disengagement of the engine to the gearbox & enable flawless starting
- Dissipate the heat generated between friction surfaces
- Provide driver control / comfort of the rate of engagement and thus enable smooth gear changes
- Transmit full engine torque through the transmission
- Filter out dynamic vibrations between the engine and the gearbox
- To act as protection against overload – provide a safety fuse to protect the drive train
- The need for durability, extended service life of components
