The basic function of a clutch is the following:

• Allow the engagement and disengagement of the engine to the gearbox & enable flawless starting
• Dissipate the heat generated between friction surfaces
• Provide driver control / comfort of the rate of engagement and thus enable smooth gear changes
• Transmit full engine torque through the transmission
• Filter out dynamic vibrations between the engine and the gearbox
• To act as protection against overload – provide a safety fuse to protect the drive train
• The need for durability, extended service life of components
