It was more than a decade ago that Du Preez Estate of Rawsonville, in the beautiful Breedekloof valley, sent ripples of shock through the local wine fraternity. Polla’s Red, a blend of bits and bobs left over in the winery and named for the winemaker’s grand-mother, Paula, was deemed the best value non-Bordeaux red blend at the esteemed Trophy Wine Show.
At the time, Hennie du Preez reported that they were almost overwhelmed by the stampede of folks eager to stock up on this wine. Since then, savvy bargain hunters have made this winery a ‘must stop’ when shopping for great-value wines because it remains one of those producers that over-deliver. They won’t hike their prices to make the most of one Trophy win; they truly believe in giving consumers decent wine at a price that won’t break the bank, as evidenced by this Rockfield Cabernet Sauvignon at R34 a bottle.
The Du Preez family has farmed the alluvial soils near the Breede River for a century and are proud that these broad vineyards are still in family hands. Now worked by the third generation, preparations continue for custodianship by the fourth. Over the past decade or so, the plantings have been upgraded and modernised – as has the winery.
